What should people look for when hiring a personal trainer?
Keep in mind when hiring a personal trainer that there are many different types of personal trainers out there. I have worked with over 100 different personal trainers during my career, and I can tell you, not all trainers are created equal. It can be difficult for someone who is considering hiring a personal trainer for the first time to distinguish between one who is exceptional versus mediocre. Quality personal trainers are out there; you just have to know what to look for.
Personal training is a big financial investment, so pressure can be high when searching for your perfect trainer. After reading this blog post, my hope is that you will gain confidence in choosing the right personal trainer for you. After many years of personal training experience, I have noticed four (4) traits that are possessed by each and every elite personal trainer I have worked with: a high standard of education, a true passion for personal training, caring for the well-being of each client and the ability to listen.
First and foremost, a quality personal trainer should be a well-educated individual with multiple years of personal training experience. A personal trainer who takes the time to receive proper education demonstrates that he or she is willing to further his or her knowledge to become the best personal trainer possible. Does the personal trainer have a college degree in exercise science, biomechanics, kinesiology or nutrition? Although a college degree is not required in order to become a personal trainer, it helps set the foundation for personal training. If a similar college degree is missing, then look for the personal training certification(s). ACSM, NSCA and ACE are typically seen as the gold standard.
Another essential key is to find an honest personal trainer who has a passion for personal training. This will show in their voice and body language in the first couple of minutes of meeting with them. A personal trainer who looks forward to coming to work every day will bring an enthusiasm that is contagious to the client. High energy can raise motivation levels. Furthermore, passionate personal trainers are eager to help drive you towards success. They will hold you accountable until your goals have been reached.
Personal training is all about delivering on clients’ health and fitness goals. An exceptional personal trainer possesses integrity and truly cares about the success of each client. The best personal trainers are multi-dimensional and are able to adapt to any type of personal training client. With a well-balanced workout regimen and nutrition plan, success is right around the corner.
Personal trainers have the responsibility to listen to clients and deliver on those wishes. Remember, you are the one hiring the personal trainer not the other way around. Since personal trainers are hired to help clients reach their goals, it is important that they listen to what it is that the client actually wants to achieve. Since the clients’ goals can constantly change, it is important to find a personal trainer who is committed to helping you reach those goals.
A lot of personal trainers will tell you exactly what you want to hear. Therefore, it is important to read between the lines and conduct your own due diligence. Speak or meet with a personal trainer before you make any commitment. Most trainers will offer you a complimentary personal training session to give you a feel of what to expect. Take advantage of this free session. By the end, you should have a much better feeling if it is the path you want to take. Good luck!
